Controlling Logical Scope in Text Generation

چکیده

Many applications of Natural Language Generation employ object-oriented knowledge representation formalisms such as loom. Each entity in the domain is represented by an object belonging to a speciied class and possessing attributes suitable for that class. From a logical viewpoint, domain entities correspond to existentially quantiied variables, but since loom and kindred formalisms provide no scop-ing mechanisms, it has to be assumed that all variables have wide scope. For technical material including conditional, negative or modal contexts this is a serious limitation. We suggest a simple extensions to standard object-oriented formalisms which allow encoding of logical scope, and show how logically complex material can be edited using thèwysiwym' approach .

A Corpus of Scope-disambiguated English Text

Previous work on quantifier scope annotation focuses on scoping sentences with only two quantified noun phrases (NPs), where the quantifiers are restricted to a predefined list. It also ignores negation, modal/logical operators, and other sentential adverbials. We present a comprehensive scope annotation scheme. We annotate the scope interaction between all scopal terms in the sentence from qua...

Exploiting logical document structure for anaphora resolution

The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, an approach is presented how to select the correct antecedent for an anaphoric element according to the kind of text segments in which both of them occur. Basically, information on logical text structure (e.g. chapters, sections, paragraphs) is used in order to select the antecedent life span of a linguistic expression, i.e. some linguistic expressions ...

The Penn Discourse TreeBank as a Resource for Natural Language Generation

While many advances have been made in Natural Language Generation (NLG), the scope of the field has been somewhat restricted because of the lack of annotated corpora from which properties of texts can be automatically acquired and applied towards the development of generation systems. In this paper, we describe how the Penn Discourse TreeBank (PDTB) can serve as a valuable large scale annotated...

Techniques for Text Planning with XSLT

We describe an approach to text planning that uses the XSLT template-processing engine to create logical forms for an external surface realizer. Using a realizer that can process logical forms with embedded alternatives provides a substitute for backtracking in the text-planning process. This allows the text planner to combine the strengths of the AI-planning and template-based traditions in na...

Monotone Decreasing Quantifiers in a Scope-Free Logical Form

In Hobbs (1983) (henceforth, ITQ) and Hobbs (1985) (OP) I developed the outlines of an approach to semantic representation in which the logical form of an English sentence is a flat (i.e., scope-free) conjunction of existentially quantified, positive literals, with roughly one literal per morpheme. In this representation scheme the logical form of a sentence is vague with respect to quantifier-...
